WHY UPDATE THE ZONING ORDINANCE?
Zoning is important because it determines what kind of development can occur on almost every property in Town. Used effectively, zoning helps to sustain what we all know and love about South Kingstown and helps change the things that need improvement. South Kingstown has a long history of adjusting its zoning ordinance to achieve its vision for housing. Over the years, the Town has developed standards for:
Flexible Design Residential Projects: Allowing homes to be built on smaller lots (or portions of as lot) in exchange for protected open space and homes suitable for smaller households.
Accessory Apartments: Allowing a small apartment to be added to most single-family homes in the town.
Inclusionary Zoning: Requiring a certain percentage of new development with six or more homes to be set aside for low-moderate income households.
The Town wants to use this process to see how we can continue to adjust our zoning ordinance so that it does an even better job of producing what we want to see and realizing our community vision.
